Featured Snippets
The answer box Google shows above all organic results — and the closest traditional SEO has to an AI Overview citation. Winning a featured snippet is still the fastest way to own position zero.
A featured snippet is a selected search result that Google displays in a box at the top of a search results page, above all organic links. It pulls a short extract — a paragraph, list, or table — directly from a webpage and attributes it with a link. Featured snippets appear for roughly 12% of all queries and are the precursor to AI Overviews: the same content signals that earn a featured snippet also increase your chances of being cited in Google AI Overviews.
Types of featured snippets
Google displays four main snippet formats, each triggered by different query types:
Paragraph snippets
A block of 40–60 words answering a “what is”, “why”, or “how does” question. The most common format. Triggered by definition and explanation queries. To win one, write a direct answer in the first sentence of the relevant section, using the query phrasing in the heading immediately above it.
List snippets
Ordered or unordered lists for “how to”, “steps”, or “types of” queries. Google extracts the list items directly from your HTML. Use <ol> for step sequences, <ul> for collections. Keep each item to one short sentence. The heading above the list should state the query exactly.
Table snippets
Comparison tables for queries like “X vs Y” or “pricing of X”. Google renders your HTML table directly in the snippet. Tables with a clear header row and 4–6 rows perform best. Keep column labels short.
Video snippets
A timestamped video clip for procedural queries. Google identifies the specific moment in the video that answers the question. Adding timestamps in YouTube descriptions and video schema markup improves selection rate.
💡 Featured snippets and AI Overviews are related but not identical. A page that holds a featured snippet for a query is significantly more likely to be cited in Google AI Overviews for that same query. The content signals overlap: direct answers, structured format, FAQPage schema, and clear authorship all contribute to both. Optimising for featured snippets is one of the most efficient steps you can take toward AI Overview citation.
How to optimise for featured snippets
Target queries that already show snippets. Not all queries trigger featured snippets. Use Ahrefs or Google Search Console to identify queries where you rank in positions 1–10 and a snippet is currently shown. These are the highest-leverage opportunities: you are already close enough to win the box.
Write a direct answer in the first 60 words below the relevant heading. The heading should contain the question. The paragraph immediately below should answer it directly, without preamble. “Featured snippets are…” is better than “In this article, we will explore…”
Match content structure to snippet type. For list queries, use actual HTML lists. For table queries, use HTML tables with header rows. For paragraph queries, write a tight 40–60 word answer with no fluff. Google extracts content structurally — its parser looks for the HTML element that best answers the query.
Add FAQPage schema. Schema markup, specifically FAQPage, signals to Google that your content is formatted as Q&A pairs and increases the selection rate for both featured snippets and AI Overviews. Each FAQ question should match a query people actually search for.
Keep answers concise. Google truncates snippet text at around 300 characters. If your answer is longer than that, the most important information should come first.
Why featured snippets matter for GEO
In 2026, featured snippets and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) are closely related disciplines. Both reward the same content behaviours: answer-first structure, clear formatting, direct language, and schema markup. A page that earns a featured snippet for a query is demonstrably more likely to be cited in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT responses for that same query.
This means the work you do to win featured snippets compounds into AI visibility. Every FAQPage schema block, every answer-first paragraph, every well-structured list — each one serves both the organic snippet and the AI citation simultaneously.
⚠️ Watch out: Google can remove a featured snippet from your page at any time, even if your content has not changed. Snippet ownership is not permanent. Treat winning a snippet as an ongoing optimisation task, not a one-time achievement. Update the content regularly and monitor Search Console for snippet gains and losses.
Frequently asked questions about featured snippets
What is a featured snippet?
A featured snippet is a short extract of content that Google displays at the top of a search results page, above all organic links, to answer a specific query directly. It includes a brief text answer, a link to the source page, and the page title. Google selects featured snippets algorithmically based on which page best answers the query in a clear, structured format.
Do you need to rank number one to get a featured snippet?
No. Featured snippets are often won by pages ranked between positions 2 and 10. Ranking first is not a requirement. What matters more is whether your content directly answers the query in the format Google is looking for. A page ranked fifth with a clear, structured answer often beats a page ranked first with dense, unstructured prose.
Are featured snippets the same as AI Overviews?
No, but they are related. Featured snippets are a single sourced extract from one page. AI Overviews are synthesised answers that may draw from multiple sources and are generated by Google’s AI rather than extracted verbatim. However, the content signals that earn featured snippets — answer-first structure, FAQPage schema, clear formatting — also increase the likelihood of being cited in AI Overviews. Winning a featured snippet for a query is a strong predictor of appearing in the AI Overview for the same query.
How long should a featured snippet answer be?
For paragraph snippets, aim for 40–60 words. Google typically truncates snippet text at around 300 characters. For list snippets, 4–8 items work best. For table snippets, 4–6 rows with clear column headers. The goal is to answer the question completely within the snippet’s character limit so the extract stands on its own without requiring additional context.
Does featured snippet optimisation help with ChatGPT and Perplexity?
Indirectly, yes. ChatGPT and Perplexity do not read Google’s featured snippet box. However, the content practices that win featured snippets — direct answers, structured formatting, clear headings, FAQPage schema, short concise sentences — are the same practices that make content more likely to be extracted by AI systems generally. Pages optimised for featured snippets tend to also perform better in AI-generated answers across platforms.
