AI SEARCH GUIDES · THE COMPLETE GUIDE
AI Visibility: What It Is, How to Measure It, and How to Improve It
AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention, cite or recommend your brand when people ask questions in your category. It is measured through citation rate, position, share of voice and sentiment. This guide explains each part in plain terms, with data current to July 2026.

What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is the measure of how often, how prominently and how favourably AI systems name your brand when users ask questions your business should be the answer to. A brand with high AI visibility gets named on the buying prompts in its category. A brand with low AI visibility loses the shortlist before it knows a buyer existed.
AI visibility is not the same thing as search rankings. A page can rank first on Google and never be cited by ChatGPT, because the two systems select sources differently. It is also not the same thing as AI referral traffic. Most AI answers resolve without a click, so the influence happens whether or not a visit is recorded. The discipline of improving AI visibility is called Generative Engine Optimisation, covered in our guide to GEO.
WHY IT MATTERS IN 2026
Buyer research moved. Most brands did not.
73%
of B2B buyers use AI tools in vendor research (Averi analysis of 680M citations, March 2026)
51%
of B2B software buyers now start research in AI chatbots more often than Google (G2, late 2025)
88%+
of B2B brands do not appear when buyers query their category in AI tools (Flow Agency, 2026)
5x
AI search traffic converts at 14.2% versus 2.8% for Google organic (Exposure Ninja, March 2026)
The click is disappearing too. Around 60% of Google searches now end without a click, and 93% of sessions in Google’s AI Mode end without a website visit. Pew Research found organic click-through drops from 15% to 8% when an AI Overview appears. Visibility inside the answer is replacing the click as the unit of discovery.
AI visibility vs SEO: what actually differs
SEO earns you a position in a list of results. AI visibility earns you a place inside the answer itself. The two overlap far less than most teams assume: only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity for the same queries (Averi, March 2026), and ChatGPT cites just 15% of the pages it retrieves while answering (AirOps, March 2026). Ranking well is helpful. It is not sufficient.
| SEO | AI VISIBILITY | |
|---|---|---|
| The unit of success | A ranking position and a click | A citation or recommendation inside the answer |
| What the system rewards | Relevance, links, technical health | Extractable answers, entity clarity, trusted third-party mentions, freshness |
| Where it is measured | Rank trackers, Search Console | Prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, Copilot |
| Failure mode | You rank low and see it immediately | You are absent from answers and never see it happen |

The four metrics that define AI visibility
1. Citation rate
The percentage of tracked buying prompts where AI names your brand. If AI names you on 12 of 50 prompts, your citation rate is 24%. This is the headline number in any AI visibility measurement.
3. Share of voice
Your citation rate relative to competitors on the same prompts. A 30% citation rate means little if a competitor holds 70%. Share of voice shows who is winning the category conversation.
2. Position when named
Where you appear in the answer. AI often names several brands together, and being first carries more weight than being fifth. Average position tracks whether you lead the list or trail it.
4. Sentiment
How AI describes you when it names you. Positive, neutral or qualified. Two brands can share a citation rate while one is described as the safe choice and the other with caveats. Sentiment is where reputation lives inside AI answers.
How AI decides which brands to cite
AI systems do not answer commercial questions from memory alone. Commercial prompts trigger a live web search 53.5% of the time in ChatGPT, against 18.7% for informational prompts (Josh Blyskal, January 2026). The system retrieves sources, then cites a small fraction of them. Six factors decide whether you make that cut.
Entity clarity. AI must understand exactly what your firm does, who it serves and where it operates. Vague positioning produces vague or absent citations.
Trusted third-party sources. AI leans heavily on independent coverage. Listicles alone account for 40.9% of citations on commercial queries (Wix, March 2026). If the roundups and directories AI reads do not include you, most commercial answers cannot either.
Extractable structure. Direct answers, clear headings, tables and FAQ formats get lifted. Brochure copy gets skipped.
Freshness. Dated statistics and recently updated pages win citations over stale ones. Every claim on this page carries its source and date for exactly that reason.
Consistency across the web. Your site, your listings and your third-party coverage need to describe you the same way. Contradictions lower confidence, and low confidence means no citation.
Proof AI can quote. Specific claims with numbers beat adjectives. “Reduced onboarding time by 40%” is quotable. “Industry-leading solutions” is not.
These six factors are the levers behind our AI citation engine, and they map directly onto the gap analysis inside every audit we run.
How to measure your AI visibility
Manual spot checks. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your buyers ask, and note who gets named. Free and immediate, but a snapshot of one phrasing on one day. AI answers vary by platform, wording and time, and only 12% of cited sources match across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI on the same queries (Passionfruit, 2026). Spot checks tell you something is wrong. They cannot tell you how wrong, or why. Our step-by-step guide to checking your AI visibility free covers the full method.
GEO software. Platforms such as Peec AI, Profound and Scrunch AI run your prompt set daily across engines and turn the noise into trend data. Our research arm has tested and ranked the market in the best GEO software guide, with a full buyer guide and pricing breakdown. Tools give you the data layer. They do not tell you which gaps matter commercially or what to do about them.
A professional audit. An AI Visibility Audit runs 50+ buying prompts across five platforms and delivers your citation rate, share of voice against four competitors, sentiment analysis and a prioritised gap plan. Our guide to what an AI visibility audit covers and costs breaks down the six components, 2026 market pricing and the red flags to avoid. It is the fastest route from “we think we have a problem” to “we know exactly which gaps are costing us and in what order to fix them”. Ongoing movement is then tracked through monthly AI Visibility Monitoring.
FAQ
Common questions.
What is AI visibility in simple terms?
AI visibility is how often AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini mention or recommend your brand when people ask questions in your category. High AI visibility means you appear in the answers your buyers read. Low AI visibility means competitors get named instead, and the shortlist forms without you.
How is AI visibility different from SEO?
SEO earns a position in a list of search results. AI visibility earns a citation inside an AI-generated answer. They are won differently: SEO rewards relevance, links and technical health, while AI citation rewards extractable structure, entity clarity, trusted third-party mentions and freshness. A page can rank first on Google and receive zero AI citations.
What is a good AI visibility score?
Scores are relative to your category, but as a rule of thumb: below 40% citation rate on your core buying prompts means you are largely invisible in the research phase, 40 to 70% means you compete but do not lead, and above 70% means you appear consistently on the prompts that matter. Most B2B brands sit near zero when first measured, since 88% or more do not appear at all on category queries.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Technical fixes and content restructuring can move citations within weeks, because AI systems retrieve live sources when answering commercial prompts. Placement in third-party sources AI already cites can register in weeks too. Broader share of voice compounds over three to six months. AI visibility responds faster than traditional SEO because the retrieval layer refreshes constantly.
Which AI platforms matter most for B2B?
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot cover the large majority of B2B research behaviour. They cannot be treated as one channel: only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity for the same queries, so visibility must be measured and built per platform. Copilot deserves particular attention in corporate environments where it ships inside Microsoft 365.
What does an AI visibility audit cost?
NBound’s AI Visibility Audit starts at £2,500 as a one-time engagement, covering 50+ buying prompts across five AI platforms, competitor share of voice, sentiment analysis and a prioritised gap plan, delivered in 14 business days. Ongoing tracking through AI Visibility Monitoring starts at £650 per month, and the audit fee is credited if monitoring starts within 60 days.
