Technical SEO

The foundation of all search visibility — optimising how your site is crawled, indexed, and rendered by search engines and AI systems.

Technical SEO is the practice of optimising the infrastructure of a website — its speed, crawlability, indexation, structured data, mobile performance, and security — so that search engines and AI crawlers can access, render, and rank its content correctly. It is the foundation all other SEO and GEO work depends on.

What technical SEO covers

Technical SEO addresses the parts of your website that users rarely see but that determine whether search engines can find, understand, and index your content. No amount of great writing or backlink building will compensate for a site that Google cannot crawl or that loads so slowly that its Core Web Vitals score disqualifies it from competitive ranking positions.

The main components are:

Crawlability

Search engines use automated bots (crawlers) to discover pages by following links. If your pages are blocked by robots.txt, hidden behind login walls, or orphaned with no inbound links, they will not be crawled or indexed. Crawl budget — the number of pages Google will crawl on a given site in a given timeframe — matters more on large sites. Wasting crawl budget on low-value pages (duplicate content, infinite scroll, low-quality filters) means important pages get crawled less frequently.

Core Web Vitals

Google uses three user experience metrics as ranking signals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP, how fast the main content loads), Interaction to Next Paint (INP, how quickly the page responds to user input), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS, how much the layout shifts unexpectedly during load). Pages in the top competitive positions on high-volume commercial queries consistently score in the “Good” range on all three. As of 2026, LCP under 2.5 seconds and INP under 200 milliseconds are the thresholds that matter most.

Mobile-first indexing

Google indexes the mobile version of your pages first. If your mobile site has different content, missing structured data, or slower load times than your desktop version, those gaps directly affect rankings. This has been the default for all sites since 2021.

HTTPS and security

HTTPS is a baseline ranking signal. Sites without SSL certificates receive a “Not secure” browser warning and rank below secure equivalents. Beyond the certificate itself, security headers, mixed content warnings, and vulnerability exposure all affect trust signals.

Structured data and schema markup

Schema markup is technically part of technical SEO because it requires code implementation, but its impact extends into GEO. Properly implemented structured data enables rich results and makes your content machine-readable for AI systems. Technical SEO audits always include a schema audit.

Indexation

Not every page should be indexed. Indexation management — using noindex tags, canonical URLs, and XML sitemaps to guide Google to the right pages — is one of the highest-leverage technical SEO activities. Indexing thin, duplicate, or low-quality content dilutes your site’s overall quality signals.

Technical SEO deals with the infrastructure of your site — how it is built, how it behaves, and how crawlers access it. On-page SEO deals with the content on individual pages: titles, headings, keywords, internal links, and copy. Both matter, but in a specific order: fix technical issues first, then optimise on-page elements. A perfectly optimised page on a site with broken crawlability gains little.

How to audit your technical SEO

A technical SEO audit examines: crawl coverage (which pages are being crawled and indexed), page speed (Core Web Vitals scores from Google Search Console), mobile usability (errors reported in GSC), structured data (using Google’s Rich Results Test), internal link structure (depth of important pages, orphan pages), and redirect chains (302 vs 301, chains longer than two hops).
